Tales of a Lavender Party Dress

The Curated Curvy

Updated: Jul 9, 2023

Hello fellow makers!

This month I had the pleasure of working with a Minerva exclusive print which is this gorgeous Wildflower Fusion design that is printed onto the most wonderful quality cotton sateen base cloth.

It was my first time working with cotton sateen and like most I assumed it would be similar to a satin, it is not. It’s more akin to a lawn but with a softer, more luxurious feel and silky drape.

In my previous post, I went over all of the modifications made to the dress so check that one out for all of the deets. This post will focus on the final dress and fabric.

The goal of this dress was to create a party dress that could be worn beyond the event it was intended for. Therefore the dress had to be fun but true to my style. I was inspired by a picture of Lauren Hill, one of my favorite recording artists, back in the 90’s. I admired how the look was simple but packed a punch. It was playful and still a bit sexy. However, fitted dresses aren’t true to my aesthetic. So my take on the inspiration was to go with a shift style dress. Still short, fun and flirty but definitely not tight. I settled on Vogue 1723 and made all of the mods mentioned in the previous post.

In the previous post, I forgot to mention that I also changed the sleeves. The pattern calls for bubble style sleeves. I made it bigger, longer and gave it a ruffled hem by folding it up 3 inches, creating an elastic casing and adding a ½” piece of elastic.

The nature of the fabric is quite relaxed so I struggled to get the sleeves to stay up and hold a nice puff. I went back and forth about how to address this problem and ultimately I settled on gathering a long piece of organza and adding it to the sleeve head by stitching in the ditch and that gave me the puff that I was looking for.

This fabric is just stunning! It’s also such a dream to wear. The event was hosted in humid Miami, Florida and while it was hot, I didn't get all yucky and sticky - I fully attribute that to the breathability of the fabric.

The print is even more beautiful in person. Each color comes through so vibrant and so clear, making it really easy to pair with other colored items. I went with a hot pink bag and a lavender shoe but you could easily pick out other colors from the print to highlight with different accessories.
